Canada and Panama clash in Gold Cup
Canada and Panama are fighting for a better position in the quarterfinals when they wrap up their Group C campaign in the Gold Cup at the Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas Wednesday morning.
A win for the Panamanians will give them the top spot in the group. The Central Americans seized the solo lead in the group with six points following their 2-1 victory over USA last Saturday.
A goal from Luis Tejada in the 19th minute and a 36th-minute conversion from Gabriel Gomez sealed the win for La Marea Roja.
The Canadians, meanwhile, will do everything they can to avoid a quarterfinal showdown with Mexico. The North Americans are tied with the United States with three points but have an inferior goal difference.
"Panama is a good team," defender André Hainault said.
"Obviously, you can see that by the result they got against the United States. But they are a team that has their weaknesses, too."
Canadian coach Stephen Hart shared his sentiments
"I said before the Gold Cup and people probably laughed at me but I've seen them play maybe 10 games," he said.
"They're a very good team, they have a very good forward line, the midfield is very dynamic and everybody saw it so they are a top team."
