Costa Rica and Honduras clash in CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals
The New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey is the site between the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match between Central American giants Costa Rica and Honduras.
Costa Rica finished second to Mexico in Group A. Los Ticos demolished Cuba 5-0 in their opening match but was held to a 1-1 draw by El Salvador in its next fixture. Costa Rica wrap up its group campaign with a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Mexico.
Costa Rica has never beaten Honduras in the Gold Cup and head coach Ricardo Lavolpe is now aware of this fact.
"It's good to know that," Lavolpe told boxscores.com
"We are going to try and win it. This is another game but we will try to play our best game."
Marco Ureña is Costa Rica's top scorer. Lavolpe will also count on Alvaro Saborio and Bryan Ruiz to lead the team's attack.
Honduras, meanwhile, placed second to Jamaica in Group B. Los Catrachos were held to a goalless draw by Guatemala in their opening match but they bounced back with a 7-1 annihilation of Grenada in their second match. Honduras, however, lost to Jamaica 0-1 in its final group fixture.
Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez, meanwhile, is not sure whether he will field star Carlos Costly in tonight's match.
“For some reason if he is not healthy enough to go, I won't count on him," said Suarez of Costly, who has been nursing a rib injury.
With or without Costly, Jerry Bengston and Walter Martinez are expected to deliver for the Hondurans.
