Jamaica and Guatemala duel in CONCACAF Gold Cup
Jamaica will shoot for a place in the quarterfinals when it takes on Guatemala in the Gold Cup Saturday morning at the FIU Stadium in Miami.
The Reggae Boyz kicked off the tournament in style, thrashing Grenada 4-0 in its first Group B match. Luton Shelton (21st), Ryan Johnson (39th), Demar Phillips (79th) and Omar Daley (84th) scored a goal each as Jamaica took the early lead in the group.
"Except for complacency and the fact that our finishing let us down, the overall performance of the team was excellent," head coach Theodore "Tappa" Whitmore told the Jamaica Gleaner after the match.
"It's a good way to start, but I think we could have scored a lot more (goals),"
Guatemala, meanwhile, is seeking for its first win after holding Central American rivals Honduras to a goalless draw in its opening match.
Los Chapines managed to hold their fancied opponents to a draw despite being reduced to 10 men in the 61st minute and nine in the 79th minute.
"We're happy with the effort we gave, but not satisfied," Guatemala defender Marco Pappa told mlssoccer.com
"You always have to improve and we have some opportunities to improve here coming up. We have to look forward to the next match and just continue working hard."
