Jamaica and United States face off in CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals
The RFK Stadium in Washington DC plays host to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match between Jamaica and the United States Sunday night.
The Jamaicans swept all their matches in Group B, beating Grenada (4-0), Guatemala (2-0) and Honduras (1-0).
Ryan Johnson, Dane Richards and Luton Shelton comprise Jamaica's formidable frontline. Donovan Ricketts, meanwhile, has been impressive in guarding the goal posts.
"We came here to at least be in the semifinal," Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore told concacaf.com.
"When we are looking at the next game we know it’s going to be tough."
"We have made a lot of progress; we have a set of guys who have been working for a year, a good bunch, disciplined and everything," added Whitmore, whose wards have yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
The United States, meanwhile, is out to make up for its disappointing campaign in the group stage. The Americans beat Canada 2-0 in their opening Group C match but were shocked by Panama 1-2 in their second outing. USA was made to work against Guadeloupe before pulling off a 1-0 win to finish second to the Panamanians in the group.
Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey will be counted upon to deliver the goals although the two players missed training to attend weddings of loved ones.
Another player who has played well is Jozy Altidore, who has scored two goals in the tournament. Steve Cherundolo and Carlos Bocanegra will spearhead the team's defense while Tim Howard will again man the posts.
"Our goal has always been to get to the final," USA head coach Bob Bradley told the Los Angeles Times.
"We understand from experience what it means in group play. You have to deal with each game and find a way to advance."
Altidore, meanwhile, said they the squad usually performs well when under pressure.
"We have to come out and press all over the field and play some exciting soccer," he said.
"We've addressed it. Little by little we’re getting better and when the games are on the line, in the bigger games, we're going to play well."
