Mexico and Guatemala duel in CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals
Mexico and Guatemala clash in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals Sunday morning at the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey.
The Mexicans are the overwhelming favorites in this duel. El Tri have been the most impressive team in the tournament, rolling past El Salvador (5-0), Cuba (5-0) and Costa Rica (4-1) to sweep Group A.
With Manchester United star Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez heading the team's attack, the Mexicans have scored 14 goals in the competition.
Giovanni Dos Santos has also been impressive in setting up his teammates. Also expected to play well are Aldo De Nigris and Andres Guardado.
Guatemala, meanwhile, is happy to reach this stage of the tournament. Los Chapines made it to the knockout stage as one of two best third-ranked teams. Their 4-0 demolition of lowly Grenada in their final Group B match allowed them to pip Canada for the final quarterfinal berth.
Veteran striker Carlos Ruiz will be counted upon to lead Guatemala to a major upset.
